From the more than 100 years of cinema history I've personally picked movies that are unique, extremely engaging and watchable. Some of them include me as the main character. Others are starring different actors. But always, always are of the highest quality, disturbing, not stupid and thought provoking.
Let me tell you how I've made the top picks for the movies that made it to my website. There were three main reasons for me to include the movie to the Firstsnow catalog.
The very first one was if the movie is extremely popular and has a very high score on movie rating sites like imdb, rottentomatoes or metacritic. The video streaming sites like Netflix, HBO, Hulu or Amazon Prime have these cinema masterpiece movies in their offer for some time, 6 months, 9 months, sometimes a little longer. After the licence period ends, the masterpiece is taken out of the site's database and is no longer available to watch. And in my opinion, movies like Braveheart (1995), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), No Country For Old Men (2007), The Godfather (1972), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), Gladiator (2000), The Heat (1995), Million Dollar Baby (2004), On the Waterfront (1954), Pan's Labyrinth (2006) or Leon: The Professional (1994) should be available to watch for everybody, all the time, no matter where they live. These are classics and they should be in stock for you. Period.
The second reason the movie makes it to the Firstsnow is when I personally think it's a good movie, even if it's not that renowned or popular. It's not always that the valuable and state of the art films get the wide public attention. Sometimes people want something fast and flashy, because they are tired after work or school. They have no energy to search the internet for the really good, independent, engaging movies and they settle for what's being served in the prime time. The movies like Nightcrawler (2014), 2046 (2004), A Simple Plan (1998), Allied (2016), Gattaca (1997), Leave No Trace (2018), Shot Caller (2017) or Hell or High Water (2016) are the best examples of movies, that in my opinion are great and very interesting entertainment, but for unknown reasons, newer got the popularity and recognition they deserved.
The last condition that qualified the film for Firstsnow, was of the most subjective matter. I guess you know the feeling, when you simply like the movie, even if you know it's not very good. It might be slow, disturbing or unpleasant to watch or maybe the consecutive scenes are not connected into one unrelieved stream of thought, maybe it even has some unfavorable reviews on the movie portals but nonetheless you simply like this movie and you don't really care what other people think about it. I have it too.
And even though I know that movies like Medieval (2022), Valhalla Rising (2009), The Good Shepherd (2006), Lawless (2012), The Northman (2022), Public Enemies (2009) or Syriana (2005) are not masterpieces, I simply like them because I think that they show the world the way it really is and I would very much like to recommend those movies 2 you.
Even though I love cinema and I enjoy spending my time watching movies that resonate with me, there are some genres that I prefer over the others. Therefore you won't find many horror movies with the honorable exception of The Shining (1980) and Doctor Sleep (2019) nor will you find romantic comedies other than Woody Allen's best theatrical achievements, like Manhattan (1979), Annie Hall (1977), Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) or the Match Point (2005). We all have our taste as far as cinema is concerned and providing the limited storage space available, some choices needed to be made.
